In Office 365 you can indeed create a shared mailbox, then go to the "Active users" list (not the "Shared mailboxes" list), click on the mailbox, and do a password reset in order to set a password.

If you authenticate as a licenced user you might be able to send as the shared mailbox if you have sufficient rights.
