Shared neutral wire

Webb6 dec. 2003 · only two neutral wires, the same gage wire as the hot lines, i.e. 12 AWG, 20amp. I've also seen where a neutral is shared between two circuits for 120v receptacles. It has always been my practice that when running a circuit off of a single phase breaker to whatever load that I run a separate neutral wire for that circuit and keep it separated. WebbA shared neutral circuit has an additional hot conductor, which is connected to the opposing phase. This allows a further 20 amps to be delivered, with the addition of only one conductor. There will be 240V between the two hot conductors, and 120V between either hot and neutral.

Webb1 nov. 2001 · If you are concerned about neutral overloading on a 208/120V circuit, you have a few options. By running a separate neutral conductor for each phase wire, you can increase the current-carrying capacity of the neutral and eliminate the shared neutrals. Replacing a shared neutral with one rated for 200% of the phase current is another way … WebbYou can run 12/3 homerun and share a neutral using a two-pole GFI breaker. You CANNOT do this using two 12/2's. There you'd need two SP GFI breakers and keep both circuits completely separate. Related Professionals

Webb3 maj 2013 · A shared neutral is OK if the two hots are on opposite legs. Put them on opposite legs so as to not down grade the system if you are reasonably confidient there are no issues down the line (i.e. they are not connected together in some outlet box.) Technically I think they have to both trip together in the event of an over load. WebbShared Neutral Circuit These circuits are typically found on 120 / 240 volt single phase systems, but can be found on 208Y /120 and 277Y / 480 volt systems as well. The Grounded Neutral wire carries the unbalanced load current. (“Grounded Conductor”) Use the following guidance when the neutral conductor must be interrupted:

WebbLeave one neutral and install a 2 pole breaker, one leg to the lights and one leg to the receptacle circuit (or a handle tie).
